Scanning for exits as you enter a new area, flinching at the door opening in the movie theater, your heart skipping a beat when you hear a firework that sounded just a bit too suspicious: the sad reality of life in America.
It seems like every time you watch the news, read a headline, open social media, or talk to anybody you hear word of another mass shooting terrorizing America— and when you look at the terrifyingly rising statistics, it makes sense.
There have been 72 mass shootings in 46 days in the USA*. Lives tragically taken, people injured, families and friends who will never escape the grief, and survivors whose lives will never be the same.
Not only are the statistics displaying mass shootings high, but they are also at an all-time high.
There were 52 mass shootings in January 2023, as opposed to 34 in 2022. Hate crimes are also increasing, with New York City reporting an 18% increase in 2022, 13% in LA (2022), and other cities including Chicago, Philadelphia, and Houston reporting the same.
As the year goes on, we can only hope that this awful trend slows, for the sake of America.
