Book of the month may: the great gatsby
By: Isabela Morales
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald takes place in the Roaring 20’s of New York, when ambitions and extravagance were extraordinarily high and tells the story of Nick, the narrator, who has recently moved to the wealthy but “new money” style West Egg district of Long Island in New York. Gatsby, his next-door neighbor lives in a gigantic mansion that overlooks the bay. Nick’s cousin, Daisy Buchanan and her husband Tom Buchanan live across the bay in the fashionable, “old money” East Egg district. It chronicles the situations of these various people, as Nick experiences them, and how their situations relate to larger themes of wealth, love, and hope. As events unfold, Nick grows in his understanding of these people and grows in his own character. With a particularly complex and intriguing plot, The Great Gatsby is well renowned for its classic themes.
I give this book five stars because it is a classic—its themes have rung true throughout the ages. Fitzgerald’s writing style is both complex and captivating in its ability to draw readers into the situations of the story and convey hidden meanings in nearly every sentence. Because of these reasons and more, The Great Gatsby deserves five stars. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading. It is a very engaging book and, in my opinion, would capture the interest of nearly anyone! |
