ChatGPT: The Future of Conversational AI
By: Emma Woodford
“As technology continues to advance, we are seeing the emergence of more sophisticated artificial intelligence systems, including chatbots. One such system is ChatGPT, a large language model developed by OpenAI. In this article, we will take a closer look at ChatGPT, its capabilities, and its potential impact on the future of conversational AI.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a natural language processing (NLP) system that is capable of generating text that is indistinguishable from that produced by humans. This is achieved through the use of deep learning algorithms, which allow the system to learn from a massive amount of text data and generate responses based on the context of the conversation.
The system was developed by OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research organization founded by some of the most prominent figures in the tech industry, including Elon Musk and Sam Altman. OpenAI's mission is to develop AI systems that are safe, beneficial, and aligned with human values.”
This introduction was actually written by ChatGPT, ChatGPT has been the center of many current news debates and articles, all discussing what its capabilities are and what ChatGPT’s future holds. I input this prompt ‘write a high school level article about chatGPT’ to get a feel for where ChatGPT’s capabilities stand. Along with this intro, ChatGPT answered other questions, one of them being: ‘What are the potential applications of ChatGPT?’ ChatGPT’s response was overwhelmingly positive in stating its extensive benefits.
When the AI reached the point of discussing the drawbacks of ChatGPT it did not give an in-depth reply to the question. The AI wrote a brief paragraph about how the information provided in its responses may not be entirely accurate or reliable information. It did mention how it could potentially be used for, “malicious purposes, such as spreading disinformation or propaganda,” but that was the extent of ChatGPT’s response.
Through my own experience with ChatGPT, I am somewhat able to understand its faults. When completing an assignment for my math class I was to input a math problem that typically was solved by hand, not with a calculator, and the AI’s explanation and answer were both incorrect. Along with the botched math problem, every time I reuploaded my initial prompt of ‘write a high school level article about chatGPT’ it would give new articles, but they would be biased and mainly touch on the increased benefits and rewards of ChatGPT. Knowing that ChatGPT can easily fail or be unreliable makes me question many of the “benefits” that were mentioned in ChatGPT’s article.
When considering AI in this time of increasing fast technological growth, we as consumers must be able to look at new developments from all angles and do our research to be knowledgeable about these advancements. By doing our research we can form our own opinions on new developments and ideas such as ChatGPT. By doing this we take our role as not only citizens but as humans in staying relevant with the times and knowledgeable on world-changing advancements.

- “Customer service: ChatGPT could be used to provide customer service through chatbots, allowing businesses to provide quick and efficient support to their customers.
- Education: ChatGPT could be used to create virtual tutors or assistants that can help students learn and understand complex concepts.
- Mental health: ChatGPT could be used to create virtual therapists or counselors that can provide support and guidance to individuals with mental health issues.
- Entertainment: ChatGPT could be used to create virtual characters that can interact with users in video games or other forms of entertainment.
- Personal assistants: ChatGPT could be used to create personal assistants that can help individuals with tasks such as scheduling appointments, making reservations, and answering questions.”
